In the days leading up to Pentecost this year, one role of the Holy Spirit seems to have come up in prayer more often than others for me, but I can’t quite pin it down to one word.  Instead, I think what Jesus said about this particular role of the Holy Spirit expresses it best:

I have been listening to the new Mumford album Babel, and I have to say, my favorite song is Whispers in the Dark. It has a perfect combination of love, flawed human condition, yearning for truth and beauty, and God. The lyrics struck me the most.

In the reading, St. Paul is hearing that there is a group of people who have not heard of the Holy Spirit, yet were baptized (the baptism of St. John the Baptist – a baptism of repentance). After our talk at the Dynamic Women of Faith Conference we had several people approach us asking about spiritual direction – what they should look for in a Spiritual Director, what their role is, etc.  In my experience, the good ones are few and far between but God always gives us what we need precisely when we need it, so with that in mind, the following, in my experience, is what to look for in a good Spiritual Director.

1.  Loves the Lord, maintains a life of prayer

I don’t believe that Spiritual Directors (SD) must always be priests, or even male in general, but the one thing that we as Catholic Christians must be sure of is that the person directing us spiritually, psychologically, ecumenically, eschatologically, etc….must be a person of deep prayer and connection with the Lord – especially if your goals are to become a person of deeper prayer and grow in your love for God.  Sometimes my SD will silently pause, for 30 seconds or even a full minute in the middle of our chats and close his eyes.  It made me uncomfortable at first, but I realized recently that he’s praying, listening to the promptings of the Spirit, and he will usually ask a very pertinent question following that silence.  It’s impossible to grow as a Catholic in your relationship with Christ if your director is not on the same page with you as regards your faith-life.… Read more

It has been said that it is easier to die for God than to live for God. I would agree.

Catholics might be tempted to think that one final act of courage is more glorious than our daily commitment to mundane chores. Yet, I daresay that when Jesus said “lay down his life,” He didn’t necessarily mean “die.” Perhaps He really meant “putting aside your own life plans” for the sake of another.

Almost a year ago, I wrote a piece about Canada’s annual March for Life called “When Marchers Go Home.” The point that I tried to get across is that the pro-life movement must not be reduced to a single annual event.… Read more
